Apple’s iPhone 18 Modem Switch Adds a Privacy Boost

▼ Summary

– Apple plans to use its own modems across the entire iPhone 18 lineup, ending reliance on Qualcomm modems.
– The transition introduces a Limit Precise Location privacy feature that restricts location data shared with mobile networks.
– This privacy feature is currently only available on devices with Apple-designed C1 or C1X modems, not on Qualcomm-based iPhones.
– The feature does not affect signal quality, user experience, or emergency location data; it only limits data given to carriers.
– Carrier support for the feature is limited, with Boost Mobile in the US and several European carriers currently offering it.

Apple is reportedly preparing to equip the entire iPhone 18 lineup with its own in-house modem technology, phasing out Qualcomm components entirely. While faster speeds and better efficiency are expected, there is also a lesser-known advantage for user privacy.

With the release of iOS 26.3, Apple introduced a Limit Precise Location toggle. This feature restricts the amount of location data shared with mobile networks, reducing the granularity from a specific street address to a broader neighborhood level. The goal is to prevent carriers from accessing overly detailed location information.

Currently, this privacy setting is exclusive to devices using Apple’s C1 or C1X modems, such as the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, and M5 iPad Pro. Models with Qualcomm chips, like the iPhone 17 Pro series, do not have access to this option. However, with the iPhone 18 Pro models and the anticipated iPhone Fold expected to adopt Apple’s modem technology, the feature could become standard across the entire flagship lineup.

Enabling Limit Precise Location does not degrade signal quality or affect the user experience. It also does not compromise the accuracy of location data shared with emergency services during a 911 call. The restriction applies solely to data transmitted to cellular carriers and operates independently from the location permissions managed through Location Services for apps.

Though the hardware expansion is promising, carrier support remains a limiting factor. Currently, only Boost Mobile in the United States offers this feature. In the United Kingdom, EE, BT, and Sky have adopted it, and carriers in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, and Thailand also support the setting. For users in the EU or UK, the option can be manually enabled regardless of carrier, and it is turned on by default on supported networks. Apple maintains a complete list of compatible carriers and regions.

Looking ahead, Apple’s rumored C2 modem is expected to deliver performance comparable to Qualcomm’s latest chips, including support for mmWave 5G,a capability absent from the C1 and C1X. As more carriers embrace the Limit Precise Location setting and Apple’s modem rollout expands, broader adoption driven by customer demand could follow.
