REI’s Anniversary Sale may not kick off until March 15th, but Garmin is already offering deep discounts on its InReach Mini satellite communicators. You can now pick up the Mini 2 for $249.99 ($150 off) at Amazon, REI, and Garmin, or the Mini 3 for $399.99 ($50 off) at the same retailers. The Mini 3 discount marks the lowest price we’ve tracked on the model, which first hit shelves in late December.

Having used both the Mini 2 and Mini 3 out in the backcountry, I can say that dedicated satellite communicators beat even the latest smartphones with satellite SOS features. For one, these devices are far more durable than any phone, and they deliver multi-day battery life , something you won’t get from an iPhone 17 or newer Pixel models. They also operate reliably in high heat and let you pull weather reports, a huge advantage when you’re off the grid and exposed to shifting conditions.

The core capabilities of the Mini 2 and Mini 3 are quite similar. Both palm-sized devices tap into the Iridium satellite network for global coverage, enabling you to send texts, share your location, and trigger SOS alerts during emergencies. The key upgrade on the Mini 3 is a color touchscreen interface, which makes menu navigation and message typing much easier. (The Mini 3 Plus also adds photo and voice message support.)

Just remember: whichever model you choose, you’ll need a Garmin InReach Consumer Plan, starting at $7.99 per month. Each tier includes a set number of messages; if you exceed that limit, you’ll pay per message. I’ve rarely found the caps restrictive , I try to keep messaging minimal in the wild , but it’s worth factoring into your decision.
