Whether you embrace it or not, Amazon is doubling down on artificial intelligence as the centerpiece of its retail experience. The tech giant officially unveiled Alexa for Shopping, a new personalized AI shopping assistant powered by Alexa+, on Wednesday.

This new tool effectively replaces Rufus, the generative AI shopping assistant that debuted in 2024. While Rufus primarily helped shoppers discover and compare products, Alexa for Shopping aims to deliver highly personalized recommendations and automate the entire buying process across Amazon and other online retailers. The experience is available via voice and touch on mobile devices, desktop computers, and Echo Show smart displays.

Now live for U. S. customers, Alexa for Shopping can field a wide range of queries, from “What’s a good skincare routine for men?” to “When did I last order AA batteries?” Users simply type their question into the main search bar or the dedicated chat window, and Alexa responds with tailored answers, product suggestions, and even custom shopping guides. Amazon says the assistant learns from each customer’s habits, preferences, and purchase history to become more personal and helpful over time.

Beyond answering questions, the assistant can compare products, monitor price drops, and schedule recurring orders for essentials like pet food or paper towels. If you want to automatically add an item to your cart when it goes on sale, you can instruct Alexa, “Add this sunscreen to my cart if the price drops to $10.”

The assistant also extends beyond Amazon’s own marketplace. It can shop other online stores and use its Buy for Me feature to handle the transaction on your behalf. While this offers undeniable convenience, it also raises eyebrows given the growing debate around AI autonomy and consumer privacy.

The launch of Alexa for Shopping follows closely on the heels of Amazon’s introduction of Amazon Now, a 30-minute delivery service now available in dozens of U. S. cities, and a new AI feature that generates real-time conversational audio responses to customer product questions.
