WhatsApp is introducing a significant expansion of its AI capabilities directly within the messaging app. The platform’s latest update brings AI-powered reply suggestions directly into chats, allowing users to generate quick responses based on the context of their conversations. This enhancement is part of a broader set of new tools rolling out, which also includes smarter storage management, in-chat photo editing with Meta AI, and improved cross-platform functionality.
The most prominent addition is an upgrade to the existing Writing Help feature. Originally launched last August, this tool already assisted users with rephrasing, proofreading, and adjusting the tone of their messages. This latest iteration goes a step further by offering those contextual reply suggestions, designed to help users craft the perfect message more efficiently. Meta’s move appears strategically aimed at keeping users engaged with its own integrated AI, rather than turning to external applications for drafting assistance. While the convenience is clear, the update does raise questions about the authenticity of personal communication, as some may prefer conversations with friends and family to remain distinctly human.
Privacy remains a key point of emphasis. The company asserts that all chats stay private, even when utilizing the AI writing assistance. Accessing the feature is straightforward: users tap the chat bar, select the stickers icon in the typing field, and then choose the sparkle-dusted pencil icon that denotes the AI tools.
Beyond messaging help, WhatsApp is tackling a common user complaint: storage clutter. A new feature enables users to find and delete large files directly within any specific chat. This granular control means you can remove bulky videos or images you no longer need without having to erase an entire conversation history. For example, you could clear all media from a group chat while preserving the valuable text exchange.
The integration of Meta AI for photo editing is also arriving directly in chats. This allows users to perform quick touch-ups without leaving the app, such as removing an unwanted object from an image, changing the background, or applying a stylistic filter.
On the administrative side, WhatsApp is improving platform flexibility. Users can now officially transfer chat history from iOS to Android, in addition to transfers within the same operating system. Furthermore, iOS users gain the ability to log into two WhatsApp accounts simultaneously on a single device, a feature Android users have enjoyed for some time.
Even stickers are getting smarter. As you type an emoji, WhatsApp will now suggest relevant stickers, offering a quick way to swap a text emoji for a more expressive graphic.
These features have begun their global rollout and are expected to become available to all users in the coming weeks.
