Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s Biggest Issue Finally Fixed on Switch 2

Originally published on: July 30, 2026
▼ Summary

– The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fixes the unpopular Field Skills mechanic, which previously required players to navigate convoluted menus to equip specific Blades for navigation checks.
– Field Skills are elemental mastery and other skills tied to individual Blades that block progress unless combined levels are met, often forcing tedious grinding and menu management.
– In the new edition, Field Skills now count for every Blade the player has, eliminating the need to manually swap equipped Blades to pass skill checks.
– It remains unclear if the system automatically combines all Blades’ skill points or selects the best combination, but the change is considered a major improvement.
– Another minor update is that gameplay recording, unavailable in the original Switch release, is now supported in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

One of the most persistent frustrations in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has finally been eliminated in the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: the dreaded Field Skills system.

In our wishlist for a potential Definitive Edition last year, we specifically highlighted how cumbersome and tedious Field Skills had become. The original game forced players into endless menu navigation, swapping Blades in and out just to meet arbitrary progression requirements. If you never experienced the pain, here’s a quick recap.

Field Skills were arguably the most unpopular mechanic in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. To navigate certain areas, you needed specific elemental mastery levels. Each Blade carried its own set of skills , Pyra, for example, had Fire Mastery Lv. 3, Focus Lv. 3, and Cooking Lv. 3. But the game demanded far more: checks for Dark Mastery, Earth Mastery, Electric Mastery, Fire Mastery, Light Mastery, Ice Mastery, Water Mastery, Wind Mastery, Ancient Wisdom, Focus, Fortitude, Girls’ Talk, Keen Eye, Leaping, Lockpicking, Nopon Wisdom, and Superstrength. While exploring Alrest, you might encounter a high-level Leaping barrier. To clear it, you had to dig through Xenoblade 2’s notoriously clunky menus, equipping Blades until their combined Leaping skill hit the required threshold. These checks were scattered everywhere, but the worst came after Torna kidnapped Pyra and Mythra, stripping you of their Level 3 Focus skill. The Spirit Crucible Elpys featured a particularly brutal Field Skill check that could demand hours of grinding. The entire system begged for a rework , at the very least, allowing all your Blades to contribute instead of just the three equipped per party member.

Now, with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition already live in Australia and New Zealand, players have confirmed that Field Skills have been addressed. Interestingly, Nintendo never mentioned this fix before launch.

The change is subtle but transformative. In the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Field Skills now count for every Blade you own. You no longer need to shuffle through menus, trying to assemble the perfect combination of skills. The system simply aggregates all your Blades’ abilities.

What remains unclear is the exact mechanics. For example, if you have 20 Blades each with a single point in a skill, can you pass a 20-point check? Or does the game intelligently calculate the best possible combination? Early speculation suggests the game processes your Blades in order, using them all, but we’re awaiting official confirmation. Regardless, this is a massive quality-of-life improvement over the original.

One more small but welcome change: the original Nintendo Switch release blocked gameplay recording via the console’s built-in function. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition now allows it.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches globally tomorrow, July 30. You can see more of the game here.
