After years of anticipation, Android Auto is finally showing early signs of integrating a live speedometer directly into Google Maps. While the rollout remains extremely limited, it marks a significant step forward for the platform.

It took Google an extended period to introduce speed limit information in Maps, but the wait for a real-time speedometer has been even longer,and more puzzling. The company quietly added this capability to Apple’s CarPlay back in July 2024, and the feature has been available on standalone Android phones for quite some time. The reason for the delay on Android Auto remains unclear.

Now, however, there is tangible progress. A handful of users on Reddit have reported spotting the speedometer on their vehicle displays. One driver in Canada, running the beta version of the app (26.29.02.946673643), confirmed it was working on their system.

We have not yet seen this update on our own devices, and widespread reports are still absent. For the moment, it is safe to assume the feature is not broadly accessible. Still, after years of patient waiting, it is encouraging to see the functionality finally emerge. As with most Android Auto updates, a full global rollout could take considerable time.
