With more than 250 million vehicles now compatible with Android Auto, Google is rolling out a major update designed to transform the in-car experience. The company detailed these changes during its The Android Show I/O Edition 2026, signaling a significant leap forward for the platform.
The most striking change is a complete design overhaul. The new interface is built around personalization and glanceable information, featuring customizable widgets and an edge-to-edge Google Maps layout. Crucially, the UI is engineered to adapt seamlessly to any screen shape, whether it’s an ultrawide display, a circular dial, or a uniquely shaped panel. The design language now incorporates Material 3 Expressive elements, including dynamic fonts, smooth animations, and user-selected wallpapers. Drivers can pin persistent widgets for quick access to a favorite contact, a one-tap garage door opener, or a live weather update.
At the heart of this update is what Google calls Immersive Navigation for Google Maps. Described as the app’s biggest update in over a decade, this feature delivers a vivid 3D representation of buildings, overpasses, and surrounding terrain. The system highlights critical road details such as lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs, helping drivers navigate complex intersections and merge with greater confidence.
YouTube support is also evolving. Earlier this year, the app arrived on Android Auto in an audio-only format. Later in 2026, select vehicles from brands like BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo will support full HD video at 60fps. Google has smoothed the transition between driving states: when a car shifts from park to drive, videos do not abruptly stop. Instead, they safely switch to audio-only mode in apps that support background playback, ideal for continuing a video podcast.
Finally, Gemini Intelligence is coming to Android Auto. For phones with access to this tool, the system will be able to automate tasks on the road. For example, if a driver receives a text asking for an address, Gemini can parse the request, pull relevant details from messages, email, or the calendar, and draft a reply with the necessary information.
