A promised free upgrade for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition has turned into a major headache for console owners, prompting an apology from Obsidian Entertainment. The trouble began when the studio announced that the original version of the RPG would be delisted on May 27th, replaced entirely by the Spacer’s Choice Edition. To soften the transition, Obsidian offered a free upgrade path to anyone who owned the base game digitally on any platform. On paper, it sounded generous, especially since the enhanced edition originally cost extra.
In practice, the rollout has been anything but smooth. According to reports from Kotaku, the upgrade process has malfunctioned on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The confusion stems from the fine print: while digital owners were promised a free switch, players who owned the physical PS4 and Xbox One versions were left in limbo. On May 28th, Obsidian acknowledged the mess, explaining that “due to how entitlements work on the consoles,” those with the base disc also need the Expansion Pass to qualify for the upgrade. That requirement effectively strips the “free” label from the deal.
The studio is now offering workarounds. In a statement, Obsidian said: “If you purchased the base game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between 4/30 and 5/27, or have any issues with the upgrade, please contact our support team and we’ll work with you to make it right. Sorry again for the frustration around this.”
Reaction on social media has been harsh. Many users are voicing confusion over the convoluted process or outright anger at the situation. “Simply put: scam,” one player wrote, while another jabbed: “It’s absolutely hilarious how this shit tends to happen most to games that are fiercely critical of capitalism.” Even PC users haven’t been spared, with some reporting upgrade issues on GOG, though Steam players appear unaffected. For a game that launched with problems back in early 2023, this latest stumble is a bitter pill for fans.
