Obsidian Entertainment is rolling out a significant update for The Outer Worlds nearly seven years after its original release, and yes, that update finally includes grenades. The studio announced via a Steam post that it is deploying small upgrades today through the Spacer’s Choice Edition, addressing typographical errors, bug fixes, framerate issues, and preventing players from getting stuck in cramped spaces.
A larger patch is scheduled for May 27th, bringing performance improvements, lighting adjustments, and a variety of quest and gameplay fixes. Most notably, this update adds grenades to the original game, a weapon type that already appears in The Outer Worlds 2 but was absent from the first title. On the same day, Obsidian will delist the base version of The Outer Worlds from digital storefronts, leaving the Spacer’s Choice Edition as the sole purchase option. Current owners of the base game will retain access and receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free across all platforms. Additionally, the Spacer’s Choice Edition will drop in price from $60 to $40.
For PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S players, the upgrade process is straightforward. However, Xbox One and PS4 users must own both of The Outer Worlds DLCs to qualify for the free upgrade. The paid upgrade path is being eliminated, and the DLCs are receiving permanent discounts, making the transition cheaper and simpler.
The Outer Worlds remains a compelling action RPG, celebrated for its memorable cast, including the beloved Parvati, and its sharp anti-establishment humor. Its sequel, The Outer Worlds 2, launched last October to strong critical reception but softer player engagement, with sales reportedly insufficient to greenlight a third installment.
And a special shout-out goes to one observant fan who has been patiently waiting for grenades. Your persistence paid off.
