Retro remaster specialists Nightdive Studios have set their sights on another immersive sim classic. Following acclaimed work on the System Shock franchise , delivering both a full remake and a sequel remaster , the studio is now turning its attention back to the legendary Looking Glass Studios catalog. Prepare to slip back into the shadows: Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is officially on the way for PC and consoles.
Originally released in 1998, Thief: The Dark Project offered a radical departure from the era’s shooter-heavy landscape. Players stepped into the boots of Garrett, a master thief navigating the dark, sprawling districts of The City. The game pioneered first-person stealth as a core mechanic, rewarding patience and cunning over direct confrontation. It remains a beloved classic, though many recall its punishing difficulty with a mix of fondness and frustration. While the original is still available on digital storefronts like Steam and GOG, it has long lacked the modern quality-of-life features players now expect.
Nightdive’s new remaster aims to change that. Thief: The Dark Project Remastered bundles the original campaign with all the extra missions, enemy types, and story content from the 1999 Thief Gold expansion. The visual overhaul includes enhanced textures, updated character models, and smoother animations, alongside subtle fixes to the original level geometry. A key gameplay improvement is the addition of a weapon and item wheel, making it much easier to swap between lockpicks, arrows, and other tools on the fly.
“Thief was the first stealth game to use light and sound as game mechanics to help you hide from and sneak up on characters, rather than simply attacking them,” Nightdive noted in its announcement. “Explore unscripted, maze-like levels with advanced NPCs, who can hear, speak, and sound alarms if you make a wrong move. Each mission includes three difficulty settings with different objectives for maximum replayability.”
Additional features include a mission selector for jumping back to favorite stages, built-in support for custom fan campaigns, and full controller compatibility. The remaster targets up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Nightdive has also packed in a full suite of achievements and a “treasure trove” of behind-the-scenes development material for dedicated fans.
A specific release date has not yet been announced. However, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is slated to launch this winter on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch (both original and Switch 2), Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
