The mind behind the iconic BioShock franchise, Ken Levine, recently shared his perspective on the state of video game visuals in a conversation with IGN. According to Levine, the relentless pursuit of hyper-realistic graphics has reached a point of diminishing returns. He points to modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2, the Steam Deck, and the upcoming Steam Machine as evidence that current technology is already more than capable of delivering everything developers need. This comes as both Microsoft and Sony prepare their next-generation consoles, which are expected to arrive next year, though component shortages could delay those plans.

Levine argues that chasing photorealism often results in visuals that age poorly. “Realism doesn’t age as well as more stylistic things,” he explained. “BioShock still looks good, I think, because it wasn’t trying to get every nut and bolt super realistic.” He believes this shift is reinforced by a growing player demand for accessible, portable hardware rather than raw graphical power.

“Look at say, the Switch 2 and the new Steam Machine coming out,” Levine continued. “Those are not massive technological upgrades. That wasn’t their strategy. I think people are realising we’re hitting a bit of diminishing returns with that.” His comments suggest that the industry’s focus may be moving away from pure graphical fidelity and toward creative artistry and convenience.
