In a surprising turn of events, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has publicly contradicted her colleague Matt Booty just hours after his comments about how Microsoft will handle platform logos during its upcoming showcase. Sharma described Booty’s earlier statements as a “miss,” creating an unusual rift in messaging from the company’s leadership.
Booty, serving as Chief Content Officer, had stated during an Xbox podcast that Microsoft would be “very clear” about which platforms its games are coming to, and that it intends to “continue the precedent” it already established. That meant if a game is coming to PS5, the company wouldn’t hide that information during its livestreams. This approach contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo, which typically only highlight their own platforms during broadcasts, as they have largely avoided the multiformat publishing strategy Microsoft has embraced.
However, after seeing backlash from fans on social media, Sharma took a different stance. In a post on X, she wrote: “Seeing the feedback on logos. It was a miss, and I own it. We are talking about how we adjust for future Xbox shows.”
Whether Sharma should be swayed by the vocal minority on social media is debatable, but the shift is notable. It raises questions about what viewers will actually see during the Xbox Showcase scheduled for June 7. The event will feature first-party and third-party titles, including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable, both of which have been confirmed for PS5 and will launch day-and-date on that platform.
Earlier speculation suggested Microsoft might try to placate its core enthusiast audience by removing PS5 logos from the broadcast. Booty’s initial comments seemed to dismiss that idea. But Sharma’s backtracking now leaves the door open for a different approach.
A key storyline to watch is whether any games, such as Gears of War: E-Day, will omit the PS5 logo. Microsoft has not yet confirmed that third-person shooter for Sony’s console. If the company is indeed scaling back its multiformat releases, leaving that logo out of the trailer would signal a clear shift in direction under its new leadership.
Still, Booty also noted in the same interview that Microsoft will not discuss broader strategic decisions during its livestream, so don’t expect any definitive answers one way or the other from the event itself. The confusion between Sharma and Booty, however, suggests the company’s future plans remain far from settled.
