▼ Summary

– Halo: Campaign Evolved runs well on all tested platforms, including Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro.
– The Xbox Series S maintains “broadly” similar visuals to the Series X, but its internal resolution is around 720p with consistent performance.
– Xbox Series X performance and quality modes show “minimal” graphical differences, with performance mode having a softer image and lower resolution (1224p vs 1440p).
– PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are “almost identical” in image quality and presentation, but cutscene stuttering on Xbox consoles is absent on PS5, offering a more cohesive experience.
– The PS5 Pro provides the best experience, with PSSR delivering a sharper, cleaner image and smoother frame rates than the standard PS5.

Microsoft’s latest big-budget release, Halo: Campaign Evolved, has finally landed on PlayStation and Xbox, giving sci-fi fans plenty to celebrate. But after rigorous testing, the question of which console delivers the best performance might catch you off guard.

Digital Foundry put the game through its paces on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and the PS5 Pro, and the results are revealing. On the Xbox Series S, the game runs reasonably well, with “broadly” similar visual characteristics to its more powerful sibling thanks to Unreal Engine 5 and Lumen Reflections. However, internal resolution hovers around 720p, with performance remaining consistent.

Moving to the Xbox Series X, the difference between the 60fps performance mode and the 30fps quality mode is minimal in terms of graphical fidelity. Performance mode makes some trade-offs with foliage and shadows, and the image appears “softer” overall. Internal resolution lands at 1224p in performance mode and 1440p in quality mode, which is still respectable.

Then comes the PlayStation 5, where the story gets interesting. Digital Foundry reports that the PS5 and Xbox Series X experiences are “almost identical” across both modes, with only minor differences in shadows and finer details. As they put it, “the two consoles are effectively on parity in terms of image quality and overall presentation.”

But there’s a notable exception: cutscene stuttering that plagued both Xbox consoles was entirely absent on the PS5, providing what Digital Foundry calls “a more cohesive experience.”

Finally, the PS5 Pro takes the crown. With PSSR technology, the game delivers a “noticeably sharper, cleaner image” that smooths out lingering anti-aliasing artifacts. Image quality and frame rates are both superior to the standard PS5.

Aside from a peculiar bug that reduces the assault rifle’s fire rate and accuracy on PlayStation, the PS5 and PS5 Pro offer the most polished Halo: Campaign Evolved experience. It’s a curious twist in the console wars, but for PlayStation owners, it’s a welcome one.
