The popular social gaming platform Rec Room will soon be removed from the PlayStation Store, making it the latest title to be delisted. Developer Against Gravity has confirmed that both the PS5 and PS4 versions will become unplayable when its online servers are shut down on June 1, 2026. This process has already begun, with the studio disabling new account creation and planning to phase out premium currency purchases and creator tools throughout May.
The decision stems from persistent financial challenges. In a statement, the studio explained that Rec Room never achieved sustainable profitability despite amassing a player base of over 150 million users. The development team stated that operational costs consistently outpaced the revenue generated by the game. They spent considerable time seeking a viable business model, but shifting market conditions ultimately made that goal unattainable.
A broader downturn in the VR market and the gaming industry created significant headwinds, closing the path to financial stability. Against Gravity emphasized that announcing the shutdown now allows them to properly acknowledge the community that helped build the experience over the past decade. The studio has released a commemorative video documenting the game’s journey as part of this process.
The developer expressed deep gratitude to players for their creativity and enthusiasm, which provided great inspiration. They acknowledged the disappointment of closing the service, stating they wished they could have found a way to continue. For current users, RR+ subscriptions will be automatically extended to coincide with the shutdown date. Subscribers with active multi-month plans will receive prorated refunds for any service time lost after the delisting occurs.
