CDC Vaccine Databases Frozen Under RFK Jr.

▼ Summary

– A study found that 46% of CDC databases previously updated monthly were frozen without notice or explanation by October 2025.
– The majority (87%) of these outdated databases contained vaccination data, while none of the still-updated databases did.
– Frozen vaccination data primarily covered influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines, with only one database updated upon a later check.
– Other paused databases included information on infectious diseases like RSV hospitalizations, creating gaps in public health monitoring.
– Researchers expressed concern that these data freezes coincide with the tenure of a Health Secretary known for anti-vaccine advocacy.

A significant portion of critical public health data has gone dark, with nearly half of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most frequently updated databases frozen without explanation. A new study reveals that 38 out of 82 databases previously updated monthly have had their updates paused, creating substantial gaps in the nation’s ability to track vital health trends. This halt in data flow is particularly alarming as it coincides with the tenure of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vocal critic of vaccination programs.

Researchers from Boston University and Vanderbilt University conducted a comprehensive review, finding that as of October 2025, only 44 databases were still receiving regular updates. The vast majority of the frozen datasets, 33 out of 38, contained information directly related to vaccination surveillance. This includes crucial data on influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunization efforts. In stark contrast, none of the databases that continued to be updated contained vaccination-related information, suggesting a targeted pattern.

The data freeze extends beyond vaccines, affecting monitoring of infectious disease burdens like hospitalizations from RSV. When researchers conducted a follow-up check in December, only one of the 38 paused databases had been restored, leaving 37 completely outdated. This lack of transparency and communication from the CDC means public health officials, researchers, and the public are operating with an incomplete picture of national health.

The study’s authors explicitly link these findings to the leadership at the Department of Health and Human Services. They note that given the well-documented vaccine skepticism of Secretary Kennedy, the disproportionate freezing of vaccination databases raises serious concerns. This action undermines the surveillance systems essential for identifying outbreaks, evaluating vaccine effectiveness, and guiding public health policy.

Without these regularly updated streams of information, the country’s capacity to respond to emerging health threats is compromised. The silent pause on these databases removes a foundational tool for scientific inquiry and evidence-based decision making, potentially leaving the nation more vulnerable during future public health challenges.
