Apple has announced its latest professional laptops, the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, powered by the groundbreaking M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These new systems deliver a monumental leap in performance, particularly for artificial intelligence tasks, while also offering faster storage, increased memory bandwidth, and a suite of pro-focused features. Designed for developers, creative professionals, and researchers, the new MacBook Pro enables complex on-device AI workflows previously unimaginable for a portable computer.

According to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, the new MacBook Pro redefines the capabilities of a pro laptop. “With Neural Accelerators in the GPU, the new MacBook Pro enables professionals to run advanced LLMs on device and unlock capabilities that no other laptop can do,” he stated. The system maintains exceptional battery life of up to 24 hours while delivering this massive performance uplift.

The heart of the new machines is the M5 Pro and M5 Max system-on-a-chip, built on a new Fusion Architecture. This design combines two dies into one, featuring an up-to-18-core CPU with what Apple calls the world’s fastest CPU core. The next-generation GPU includes a dedicated Neural Accelerator in each core, which is key to the dramatic AI performance gains. Apple claims up to 4x faster AI performance compared to the previous M4 generation and up to 8x faster than M1 models. This allows for local training of custom AI models and real-time use of AI-powered tools for video, music, and design work.

Graphics performance also sees a significant boost, with up to a 50 percent increase over M4 Pro and M5 Max chips. This empowers motion designers and VFX artists to work with complex 3D scenes and preview effects in real time. Memory bandwidth has been substantially increased to handle these intensive workloads, with M5 Pro supporting up to 64GB of unified memory and M5 Max pushing up to 128GB.

Storage performance has doubled compared to the last generation, with read/write speeds reaching up to 14.5GB/s. This accelerates work with large 4K and 8K video files, AI models, and massive datasets. The starting storage capacity has also been increased, with M5 Pro models now beginning at 1TB and M5 Max models starting at a generous 2TB.

Beyond the silicon, the MacBook Pro includes the new Apple N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity, promising more reliable and faster wireless performance. It features the stunning Liquid Retina XDR display with a nano-texture option, a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, and a six-speaker sound system. Connectivity is comprehensive, with three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI supporting 8K resolution, an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3.

The laptops ship with macOS Tahoe, which introduces powerful new productivity features. Spotlight has been significantly updated, Apple Intelligence capabilities are more deeply integrated while prioritizing privacy, and Live Translation works across Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app. Developers can also tap into new frameworks to build Apple Intelligence features directly into their applications.

Apple continues to emphasize environmental responsibility with this release. The new MacBook Pro enclosure uses 100 percent recycled aluminum, and the battery incorporates 100 percent recycled cobalt. The company states the device is made with 45 percent recycled content overall and is manufactured using 50 percent renewable electricity across its supply chain.

Pricing for the new models starts at $2,199 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and $3,599 for the 14-inch model with M5 Max. Education pricing is also available. Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting on March 11. The standard 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip now starts with 1TB of storage at a base price of $1,699.
