Google’s Project Genie drops you into real places via Street View

▼ Summary

– Project Genie, Google’s world-exploring game, now lets users create worlds based on real locations using Google Street View imagery.
– Users can select a real place in the U.S., choose a style like “Desert Sands,” and describe a character to generate an explorable world.
– The tool generates scenes at 20-24 frames per second, limited to 60-second sessions, and requires significant processing power.
– Project Genie with Street View access is available only to users on the AI Ultra tier, initially in the U.S. with plans to expand.
– The research tool may not be entirely accurate, but Google plans to improve detail and precision over time.

Google is giving its experimental world-building tool, Project Genie, a major upgrade by integrating Google Street View imagery. Now, instead of only generating fictional landscapes, users can explore and reimagine real-world locations, including their own neighborhood.

Launched earlier this year, Project Genie originally used Nana Banana Pro models to construct small, explorable environments with standard video game controls, offering a first or third-person perspective. Google has always billed it as a research prototype, but this latest update bridges the gap between fantasy and reality.

The new feature taps directly into Google’s vast Street View database. As Google explains, users can now “leverage real-world imagery to explore your favorite spots, or reimagine them with a creative twist.” To get started, you tap the Maps pin, select a location within the United States, and optionally pick a visual style such as “Desert Sands” or “Stone Age.” After that, describe a character, anything from a favorite animal to a claymation monster, and Genie builds an imaginative world anchored to that real starting point.

When generating a real place, you choose from a set of environments. The character is defined by your text description. Since the tool relies on Street View imagery, the range of possible locations is virtually unlimited, covering countless streets and landmarks.

Access remains restricted to users on the AI Ultra tier due to the heavy processing demands. The system generates hundreds of interconnected images to create a scene that runs at 20-24 frames per second. Sessions are limited to 60 seconds, but that’s enough time to navigate familiar streets using standard WASD controls, either as they are or transformed into something entirely new.

Google acknowledges the tool is not perfectly accurate and plans to sharpen details over time. For now, Project Genie with Street View access launches for users in the US, with a broader rollout promised “over time.”
