The company states it has refined its Armor FlexHinge design specifically for the TriFold’s unique architecture. The two hinges are slightly different sizes to accommodate the three distinct panel shapes. The center panel is the thickest at 4.2 mm, with the flanking sections being fractions of a millimeter thinner. Samsung’s engineering accounts for these varying sizes and weights, enabling the frame to fold tightly into a compact package.
While Huawei’s Mate XT tri-fold phones have garnered attention online, they remain unavailable in Western markets. Samsung’s new entry may look similar at first glance, but the folding mechanism is fundamentally different. The Mate XT utilizes a Z-shaped configuration, employing part of the main screen as the cover display. In contrast, the Galaxy Z TriFold’s left and right segments fold inward behind a separate cover screen. Samsung asserts it has conducted extensive testing on this design to ensure the hinges withstand years of daily use.
This device certainly tests the limits of the term “pocketable.” When folded, it measures 12.9 mm thick, making it considerably more substantial than the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 8.9 mm profile. However, its thickness is only slightly greater than Samsung’s older tablet-style foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The 1080p cover screen is a familiar 6.5 inches, similar to the Z Fold 7. The most noticeable compromise for its expansive screen real estate is weight; the TriFold is very heavy for a phone, tipping the scales at 309 grams.
