Google Launches ‘Inspirational’ Images Tab to Challenge Pinterest

▼ Summary

– Google is adding a dedicated images tab to its mobile Search app for iOS and Android devices in the U.S.
– The feature displays personalized images that update daily to help users find inspiration for activities like travel, parties, and fashion.
– This new tab could compete with Pinterest and Instagram by targeting similar use cases for visual discovery and idea organization.
– Google may use the feature to increase user engagement and run advertisements within the image tab.
– Unlike Google’s previous Collections feature, this tab is focused specifically on images rather than including websites or other content.

Google has introduced a fresh mobile feature designed to serve as a go-to source for visual ideas, directly competing with platforms like Pinterest. The tech giant revealed a new Images tab within its Search app for iOS and Android, placing an icon at the bottom of the screen that presents a daily-updated feed of pictures tailored to individual user preferences. This tool aims to help people gather creative concepts, plan vacations, organize events, redecorate their homes, or explore style trends, all common activities currently dominated by social and visual discovery apps.

Users can scroll through personalized image selections, conduct additional searches, and save appealing visuals directly into their own collections. This move appears calculated to boost interaction with Google’s app at a time when emerging AI technologies are challenging its core search and advertising operations.

Another significant aspect of this update is the potential for new advertising placements. Google has already experimented with ad carousels inside the image tab on mobile, suggesting that promotional content will likely appear alongside inspirational imagery. This creates a valuable new space for the company to display ads right inside one of its most frequently used applications.

While Google previously offered a Collections tool for saving search results like websites, products, and map locations, this new tab is exclusively centered on images. The earlier feature, launched in 2016 and later enhanced with AI recommendations, was broader in scope. The dedicated image tab represents a more focused effort to capture the visual inspiration market.

The rollout for the new Images tab begins over the coming weeks for U.S. users on both iOS and Android. Google has not yet shared details regarding an international release schedule.
