– The issue affects widgets placed before the update, and adding a new Work Profile can cause the problem to return.
For many Android users, widgets have become a staple of the home screen experience, offering quick access to information and controls without opening an app. That’s why it’s particularly jarring that, for some Google Pixel owners who have upgraded to Android 17, these widgets haven’t just disappeared from the home screen, they’re also completely unavailable to restore.
The issue first surfaced during the Android 17 Beta program, with reports dating back to February. Users noticed that widgets could be removed and then couldn’t be placed back on the screen. There was no clear fix at the time, and unfortunately, the problem appears to have carried over into the stable release.
Since the stable Android 17 update rolled out earlier this week, Pixel owners on Reddit have reported that widgets have vanished from their home screens and are missing from the widget picker entirely. The bug seems to target any widgets that were in place before the update.
So, what’s causing this headache? The Work Profile appears to be the culprit. Many affected users have found that disabling the Work Profile restores their widgets. However, adding a new profile can bring the problem right back.
Google has now confirmed to 9to5Google that this is indeed a bug linked to the Work Profile, and a fix is on the way. The company stated, “We are aware of this bug affecting Work Profile users, and a fix will be rolled out in a software update soon.”
In the meantime, some workarounds exist. Users can try disabling or archiving affected apps before restoring them, or toggling focus mode for a temporary fix. Adjusting a Work Profile setting on the management side may also help. Still, none of these are ideal solutions, and the community is eager for Google to deliver a proper patch in a future Android 17 update.
