A fresh report suggests the long-rumored Fallout 3 remaster remains in active development at Bethesda. This update follows comments from Bethesda’s Todd Howard in a recent GQ interview, where he hinted at ongoing projects within the Fallout universe beyond the distant Elder Scrolls 6. Video Games Chronicle now indicates one of these projects is a remaster for Fallout 3, likely modeled after the approach taken with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

Speculation about remakes of classic Fallout titles has been building for some time. Many in the community anticipate Bethesda will revisit its older games to maintain fan engagement during the lengthy wait for the next Elder Scrolls installment. Last month’s Fallout Day 2025 event passed without any new game reveals, which some followers found disappointing. While the showcase did feature a new version of Fallout 4, a fresh bundle for Fallout: New Vegas, and additional content for Fallout Shelter and Fallout 76, it was silent on the subject of remasters.

Howard himself acknowledged that fans were likely hoping for more, promising during the Fallout Day broadcast that the studio is developing “even more” Fallout content. The Fallout 3: Remastered project now appears to be a central part of those plans, especially if it adopts the naming style of the Oblivion remaster.

Attention has also turned to a potential remaster of the fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas. Ahead of Fallout Day, actor Danny Trejo, who voiced the ghoul companion Raul in New Vegas, publicly urged Bethesda to remaster the title. This sentiment is widely shared, particularly in the wake of renewed interest sparked by the successful Fallout television series, which is set to explore New Vegas in its upcoming second season this December.

Looking further ahead, Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 5 is still on the agenda, though it will only enter full production after The Elder Scrolls 6 is completed. In a June 2024 discussion with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Howard emphasized that he has no intention of rushing Fallout 5 out the door. He explained that for future Fallout games, the team feels no pressure to hurry development, especially with the Fallout TV show currently fulfilling a specific narrative role for the franchise.

The last major single-player entry, Fallout 4, originally launched in 2015 and recently received an Anniversary Edition. Its successor, the multiplayer-focused Fallout 76, arrived in 2018 and saw a significant resurgence in popularity following the debut of the Prime Video adaptation.

Despite the clear fan demand for a new, substantial single-player Fallout experience, Howard remains committed to a measured approach. He completely understands the community’s desire for a new mainline game but stressed that these projects require considerable time to execute properly. His priority is to ensure that every new release in a beloved franchise, whether it’s Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Starfield, becomes a meaningful and well-crafted moment for the dedicated fanbase.
