Google has expanded its developing-topic link carousels to AI Mode, offering users a streamlined way to access timely journalism directly within generative search results. This update places a horizontal row of relevant article links prominently between sections of an AI-generated response, ensuring that breaking news and evolving stories receive immediate visibility.
Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, confirmed the rollout on Tuesday via a post on X. He highlighted the feature’s integration into both AI Overviews and the broader AI Mode interface. Stein wrote:
“Now live in AI Mode (already in AI Overviews): link carousels for developing topics.”
The feature is designed to surface original reporting on trending subjects. For instance, queries regarding recently discovered gold bars in Belgium trigger a carousel displaying three article cards near the top of the response. Each card includes a thumbnail image, headline, source name, and publication date, allowing users to quickly assess the credibility and recency of the information before clicking through.
Stein emphasized the strategic intent behind this design choice:
“Our goal with AI Search is to make it easy to connect with original coverage and a range of perspectives. Now live in AI Mode (already in AI Overviews): link carousels for developing topics. Ask about something that’s trending and you’ll see links to relevant articles, webpages… pic.twitter.com/SkJvceFuZh , Robby Stein (@rmstein) August 25, 2026”
Integration with Preferred Sources
This development follows Google’s initial introduction of the developing-topic carousel in May, which was part of a broader effort to prioritize original reporting and diverse viewpoints in AI-driven searches. At that time, Google noted that while the feature would appear for specific developing-topic queries, it had not yet been explicitly rolled out to AI Mode alongside AI Overviews.
Since the May announcement, Google has significantly scaled its Preferred Sources program, which identifies high-quality publishers eligible for prominent placement in search results. The company reported last week that over 600,000 unique sources have now been designated as Preferred Sources, a substantial increase from the more than 345,000 registered in May. These preferred outlets are often highlighted within the new carousels, reinforcing Google’s commitment to directing traffic to reputable journalism during fast-moving news cycles.
Impact on Visibility and Traffic
The introduction of these carousels represents a significant shift in how link placements function within AI Mode. Unlike traditional small citations embedded within generated text, the carousel offers a larger, more visually distinct area for user interaction. This increased prominence is likely to drive higher click-through rates and make impressions more noticeable for publishers whose content appears in the carousel.
However, the feature’s deployment remains selective. Google has clarified that the carousel will not appear for every developing-topic search, limiting its consistent utility for all query types. For publishers and SEO professionals, tracking performance can be challenging; while AI Mode interactions do generate impressions and clicks in Search Console, there is currently no specific filter to isolate data attributable solely to the developing-topic carousel.
Future Testing and Expansion
Stein’s announcement confirms that the developing-topic format is now fully integrated into both of Google’s primary generative search experiences. Despite this completion, Google continues to experiment with various link designs to optimize user engagement and information discovery. It remains unclear whether the carousel will expand beyond current developing-topic scenarios to cover other query categories. As Google refines these interfaces, the balance between concise AI summaries and direct access to full journalistic context will continue to evolve, potentially reshaping how organic traffic is distributed in the age of generative search.
