Valve says Steam Machine launch is set for this summer

▼ Summary

– Valve announced the Steam Machine PC and Steam Frame VR headset will launch this summer, after being delayed from an original early 2026 target due to memory and storage supply issues.
– The Steam Controller was released separately in early May, while the Machine and Frame now have a narrowed summer launch window without a specific date.
– Valve is redesigning the Steam store and rolling out Verified programs for the Machine and Frame, allowing developers to prepare their games ahead of launch.
– For the Machine, verification requirements are nearly identical to the Steam Deck’s, but it is roughly six times more powerful, potentially verifying many more games.
– The Frame’s Verified badge will indicate games that run well natively on the headset, distinct from games streamed to it, focusing on the standalone out-of-box experience.

Valve has confirmed that its long-delayed Steam Machine PC and Steam Frame VR headset will finally launch sometime this summer. The announcement came through a Thursday blog post focused on the Verified programs for both devices, where the company stated, “We’re excited for players to try your titles on the new Steam hardware once they launch this summer.”

Originally unveiled alongside the new Steam Controller late last year, Valve had planned to begin shipping the Machine and Frame in early 2026. However, persistent memory and storage shortages forced the company to reevaluate pricing and shipping timelines in February. By March, Valve published a blog post that initially expressed hope for a 2026 release, only to later update it with a firmer promise: “shipping all three products this year.”

Valve chose to release the Steam Controller independently, launching it in early May. While “summer” remains a vague timeframe, it significantly narrows the window for when the Machine and Frame might hit the market.

In preparation for the launch, Valve is overhauling the Steam store and rolling out details about the Verified programs for both devices, allowing developers to optimize their games. Similar to the Steam Deck Verified system, games that earn a badge for the Machine or Frame will be guaranteed to run smoothly without requiring user tweaks.

For the Steam Machine, the verification requirements are “nearly identical” to those for the Steam Deck. But since the Machine is “roughly six times as powerful” as the Deck, Valve expects many more titles to qualify. The company is also testing “every title on Machine that fell below our performance requirements on Deck.”

As for the Steam Frame, the Verified badge will indicate games that perform well natively on the headset, as opposed to those optimized for streaming, which the Frame also supports. “Like Steam Deck Verified, the Steam Frame Standalone Verified program focuses on the experience customers will have with the device out-of-the-box in standalone mode,” Valve explained.

Now, all that remains is for Valve to reveal exact release dates and pricing for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Given last week’s price hikes for the Steam Deck, I’m bracing for significant sticker shock.
