Meta is making a bold move into the subscription space, expanding its revenue model beyond advertising. On Wednesday, the social media giant announced the global rollout of consumer subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, alongside the initial testing of new paid tiers for businesses, creators, and those using Meta AI. Priced at a few dollars each month, these plans aim to offer power users enhanced functionality.
For Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus, both priced at $3.99 per month, subscribers unlock features like profile customization, super reactions, and detailed story insights. WhatsApp Plus, at $2.99 per month, focuses on personalization with app themes, custom ringtones, and premium stickers. Naomi Gleit, Meta’s head of product, stated that “more fun features” will be added to these plans over time, signaling a long-term commitment to the subscription model.
These Plus plans are designed to complement, not replace, the existing Meta Verified service, which remains focused on account verification and impersonation protection. For now, Meta has no plans to phase out the older offering. The new subscriptions cater to heavy users and creators who want deeper analytics and greater control over their social presence. For instance, Instagram Plus allows users to see aggregate story rewatch counts, create unlimited audience lists, spotlight a story weekly for extra views, and extend stories beyond the standard 24-hour window. Facebook Plus mirrors many of these features, while WhatsApp Plus adds capabilities like additional pinned chats and list customization.
Beyond the app-specific plans, Meta is testing a broader suite under the Meta One brand, which will serve as the company’s unified subscription hub. For Meta AI users, two tiers are being trialed: Meta One Plus at $7.99 per month and Meta One Premium at $19.99 per month. Both plans offer the same core features, but the Premium tier unlocks higher compute capacity for complex queries, enabling deeper reasoning and more advanced video and image generation across Meta’s apps. Casual users will still have free access to Meta AI, but these paid plans follow the industry trend of charging for heavier usage. Testing for AI subscriptions begins next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia.
Additionally, Meta is rolling out professional plans for creators and businesses later this week in markets like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The Meta One Essential plan, priced at $14.99 per month, includes the Verified badge, impersonation protection, and an enhanced linksheet for linking to other social channels. The Meta One Advanced plan, at $49.99 per month, adds premium benefits such as higher visibility in Facebook and Instagram search results, a bold “Follow” button on Reels, and automated follow invitations from engaged users. Advanced subscribers also gain access to deeper analytics, competitive insights, optimized scheduling tools, and alerts when their content is reused without credit.
Gleit acknowledged that Meta is still in the experimental phase with these AI and professional plans, but the company intends to consolidate all offerings under the Meta One umbrella, where they will be continuously updated and expanded over time. This strategic shift allows Meta to diversify its revenue streams beyond advertising, extracting more value from its billions of users as growth opportunities for its core apps plateau globally.
