At Google I/O 2026, alongside a wave of Android XR announcements, XREAL has officially confirmed that its Project Aura glasses will reach consumers before the end of the year. The company also unveiled a new program designed to give developers an early crack at the hardware.
First announced a year ago, XREAL Project Aura was positioned as the first wired Android XR headset , a lightweight alternative to bulkier devices like the Galaxy XR. Unlike typical headsets that rely on video passthrough, Project Aura lets users see the real world directly through glass, while overlaying digital content on the physical display.
At this year’s I/O, attendees can get hands-on with Project Aura. The company confirmed that the wired glasses will launch globally before 2026 ends. To accelerate app development, Google and XREAL have teamed up on the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program, which grants “select developers” early access to Project Aura hardware, along with the tools and resources needed to build Android XR applications. Developers can apply now at g.co/dev/catalyst.
Live demos at I/O 2026 showcase Project Aura’s capabilities, including immersive Google Maps navigation, YouTube 180 and 360-degree experiences powered by OLED displays and a 70-degree field of view, a vibe-coded painting app, and a demonstration where the glasses connect to a laptop via DisplayPort. That setup “extends the device’s multimodal AI capabilities onto the laptop in three-dimensional AR space, including integrated Gemini support and autospatialization.”
Pricing for Project Aura remains unannounced. For context, the XREAL One Pro recently saw a price drop, and the XREAL 1S currently retails for $449. XREAL has also hinted that Android XR will be central to its product roadmap moving forward.
