AI shortage fuels flood of marked-up Mac minis on eBay

▼ Summary

– The M4 Mac mini base model ($599, 16GB RAM, 256GB storage) is sold out on Apple’s website, with higher-storage configurations not shipping until June.
– Overpriced M4 Mac minis are flooding eBay, with used models selling for $700–$979, significantly above the retail price.
– Mac minis have become popular for running on-device AI models like OpenClaw and ZeroClaw due to their power efficiency, quiet operation, and reliability for 24/7 use.
– The shortage is caused by a combination of supply chain stress and increased demand for AI-friendly machines, alongside industry-wide memory shortages and a planned Mac mini refresh.
– The Mac Studio is now also sold out across several configurations, while other Apple products like the MacBook Pro and MacBook Neo remain available.

A surge in demand for compact, AI-capable hardware has created a feeding frenzy on eBay, where M4 Mac mini units are now selling well above their retail price. The $599 base model, featuring 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, has vanished from Apple’s online store, with no delivery dates or pickup options available. This shortage has now spread to other configurations of the entry-level machine, regardless of memory selection. Notably, this marks the first time the base model has completely sold out. Meanwhile, higher-storage versions (512GB and up) won’t ship until June.

The void left by Apple’s empty shelves has turned eBay into a bustling secondary market. Sellers are listing various M4 Mac mini configurations at significant markups, capitalizing on the fact that buying directly from Apple is no longer an option.

The Mac mini’s popularity as an on-device AI workhorse is the primary driver of this shortage. Starting with the OpenClaw frenzy, these power-efficient desktops have become the go-to for running local AI models, including alternatives like ZeroClaw, tools from Anthropic and OpenAI, Perplexity Computer, and other specialized local models. Unlike many PCs, Mac minis run quietly and are more reliable for 24/7 operation compared to laptops, making them ideal for continuous AI workloads.

This supply crunch overlaps with a broader industry-wide memory shortage and an upcoming Mac mini refresh reported by Bloomberg. Historically, product refreshes haven’t caused such shortages, but the current combination of factors is creating a perfect storm.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the situation.

The resulting price inflation is stark. As of Friday morning, M4 base models (16GB RAM/256GB SSD) were listed as follows: new, “open box” units sold for $715 to $795; an “excellent” refurbished version reached $979; and “lightly used, pre-owned” machines went for around $700, more than $100 over the original price. One listing for a brand-new unit at $925 warned in bold red text: “Last one.”

While a savvy buyer might still find a reasonably priced refurbished unit or win an auction with a low starting bid, prices will likely remain elevated until Apple’s supply chain catches up.

The Mac mini’s absence has also boosted demand for the Mac Studio, which is now sold out in several configurations. As Ars Technica notes, you can still order a MacBook Pro with 128GB RAM and larger SSDs within a few weeks, and the popular MacBook Neo ships in two to three weeks. This suggests the core issue isn’t a general supply problem, but rather an overwhelming consumer appetite specifically for the Mac mini itself.
