Google is bringing its Gemini AI assistant into millions of vehicles equipped with Google built-in, the company announced Thursday. This transition marks a major leap forward from the standard Google Assistant, aiming to deliver a far more conversational and intuitive driving experience.

Just one day after General Motors revealed that Gemini would arrive in roughly 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 onward, covering brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC,Google’s own announcement did not single out any specific automakers. This suggests the AI upgrade will not be exclusive to GM and could reach a broader range of compatible cars.

The rollout begins in the United States with English-language support, and availability will expand over the next several months. A key detail: Gemini is not limited to brand-new cars. Existing vehicles with Google built-in can receive the update via a software patch, making the feature accessible to many drivers already on the road.

Google’s built-in automotive system first launched in 2020. Now, with Gemini, drivers can interact with their vehicles in a much more natural way. Instead of issuing rigid commands, users can speak freely to complete tasks, explore ideas, or find information.

For example, a driver could say they want to stop for lunch at a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along their route. Gemini will pull relevant suggestions from Google Maps data, then handle follow-up questions about parking availability or menu options, including dietary preferences.

The assistant can also handle routine tasks like turning on the heat, providing directions, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and helping drivers respond hands-free.

There is also Gemini Live, currently in beta, which supports more open-ended, real-time conversations. Drivers can activate it by tapping a button on the interface or saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.” This feature enables brainstorming, learning, or general discussion while on the road.

Drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles will be prompted to upgrade. Once enabled, Gemini can be accessed through voice commands, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.

Google plans to expand Gemini support to additional languages and regions. Future updates are also expected to deepen integration with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home, further embedding the AI into daily life.
