iOS 27 Rumored for Major Design Changes in 2026

▼ Summary

– iOS 27 will be unveiled on June 8 and is rumored to include at least two changes for the Liquid Glass design.
– A new systemwide slider is planned to let users finely adjust the transparency and contrast of the Liquid Glass effect.
– This slider was attempted in iOS 26 but faced engineering challenges when expanding it beyond the lock screen clock.
– Broader interface tweaks are expected for Liquid Glass in iOS 27, but no changes as major as its initial introduction.
– The author criticizes specific UX issues in current apps, like an overly minimizing MiniPlayer and navigation tab bar.

Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 software, set for a June 8 reveal, is generating buzz for its potential to refine the system’s visual identity. Industry reports suggest the update will introduce at least two significant modifications to the current Liquid Glass design, with a focus on granting users more granular control over their interface experience.

A primary anticipated feature is a new systemwide Liquid Glass slider. In the current iOS 26, users can choose between just two presets: Clear, which offers a full transparent effect, and Tinted, a much more opaque style reminiscent of iOS 18. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple originally intended to ship a more flexible adjustment tool. During iOS 26’s development, engineers worked on a slider for fine-tuning the transparency and contrast of the glass effect across the entire system. While they succeeded in implementing it for the lock screen clock, technical hurdles prevented its rollout to other areas like the home screen, app folders, and navigation bars. If Apple overcomes these engineering challenges for iOS 27, it could fundamentally shift how people interact with and customize the interface, allowing them to find their exact preferred aesthetic between the two extremes.

Gurman has also indicated that while the Liquid Glass aesthetic will see some “tweaks” in this update, a complete visual overhaul is not expected. He noted that Apple is planning interface adjustments, though nothing as extensive as the original Liquid Glass introduction last year. The path forward appears to be one of iterative refinement, similar to the years of gradual improvements that followed the landmark iOS 7 redesign.

For many users, this approach is welcome. Even among those who appreciate the Liquid Glass direction, certain interface choices in iOS 26 feel like a step backward. A common point of frustration involves the MiniPlayer in apps like Music and Podcasts, which often shrinks to a size that hides essential playback controls, requiring a tap to reset it. Similarly, the auto-minimizing navigation tab bar can be a persistent annoyance, leading to calls for a simple setting to lock it in place permanently. As Apple prepares to showcase iOS 27, the hope is that such UI and UX regressions will be addressed, making the system not only more beautiful but also more consistently functional.
