In a significant step toward autonomous urban mobility, Uber has announced a partnership to launch what it bills as the first commercial robotaxi service in Europe. The ride-hailing giant is collaborating with two key players: Pony AI, a Chinese autonomous vehicle developer, and Verne, a Croatian mobility startup that originated from supercar manufacturer Rimac. This strategic alliance aims to deploy driverless taxis on Uber’s platform, beginning with a pilot in Zagreb, Croatia, before expanding to other European markets.
This move represents a proactive effort by Uber to navigate the industry’s shift toward autonomy. By integrating robotaxis into its network, the company seeks to secure its position and reassure investors about its future viability. The traditional ride-hail model faces potential disruption from autonomous technology, and Uber’s strategy involves forming numerous partnerships with AV developers to stay ahead of the curve.
The division of responsibilities within the new venture is clearly defined. Uber will contribute its extensive ride-hail network and customer base. Verne will take on fleet management and operations, leveraging its local expertise. The critical autonomous driving technology will be supplied by Pony AI, which already operates commercial robotaxi services in several Chinese cities. The collective ambition is to grow the initial fleet into thousands of robotaxis across Europe within the coming years.
Testing is already underway on Zagreb’s streets using the Pony AI Arcfox Alpha T5 Robotaxi. This vehicle, developed in partnership with the state-owned Beijing Automotive Group, BAIC, is equipped with Pony AI’s seventh-generation autonomous system. The partners are currently validating the technology and infrastructure, with plans to transition to a fare-charging commercial service soon, thereby claiming the milestone of Europe’s first such offering.
Verne’s involvement marks a notable development for the Rimac Group spin-off. The startup had been relatively quiet since its initial announcement as a side project. Late last year, Rimac Group founder and CEO Mate Rimac showcased a fleet of 60 prototype autonomous vehicles. It remains to be seen whether these specific prototypes will eventually join Uber’s operational fleet, but the collaboration firmly establishes Verne’s role in bringing this ambitious European robotaxi service to life.
