Microsoft’s latest Surface Laptop and Surface Pro now feature a haptic trackpad that delivers physical feedback during everyday Windows 11 tasks. When you snap a window to the edge of the screen, you feel a subtle vibration. Aligning an image in PowerPoint triggers a confirming pulse. Scrubbing through a video timeline produces vibrations that follow your finger’s motion.

Brett Ostrum, Microsoft’s VP for Surface Devices, compared the sensation to the rumble in gaming controllers. The haptic feedback works across Windows 11 and third-party applications, not just Microsoft’s own software. The Slim Pen also receives the same tactile treatment.

Under the hood, these devices run exclusively on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 platform. Consumer models ship with either a Snapdragon X2 Plus or Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. There is no Intel option available. Microsoft reserved Intel’s Panther Lake chips for the Surface Pro for Business line, meaning consumers who want an x86 Surface must go through a corporate purchasing department.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop now boasts a sharper display at 261 PPI, up from 200 PPI on the previous generation. Battery life is rated at up to 20 hours for the 13.8-inch model and 19 hours for the 15-inch version. Memory options span from 16 GB to 64 GB of RAM, with storage ranging from 512 GB to 2 TB.

Pricing starts at $1,600 for the Surface Laptop and $1,500 for the Surface Pro, though the Pro does not include the Flex Keyboard, which costs an additional $360. These prices match the previous generation after Microsoft raised them due to higher memory and component costs. The base configuration is adequate but unremarkable. Upgrading to more RAM or storage will significantly increase the price.

Microsoft has been pushing ARM on Windows since the original Surface Pro X in 2019. Compatibility has improved dramatically, but legacy Windows software can still cause odd driver issues on ARM. A bigger bet arrives later this year with the Surface Laptop Ultra, which will use Nvidia’s N1X chip built on Blackwell GPU cores, a machine aimed directly at the MacBook Pro.

The most visually distinctive part of this update is the color options. A clay-toned “Dune” Surface Pro and an olive “Jade” laptop replace the usual black and grey. The haptic trackpad is a genuine usability improvement. Whether any of it justifies spending over $1,500 on a laptop that cannot run Intel software natively is the question Microsoft keeps answering with better colors and better vibrations.
