Steam Controller snaps to your phone or almost anything else

▼ Summary

– Mechanism’s Basegrip is the first accessory to attach the new $99 Steam Controller to a phone, and it goes on sale the same day as the controller.
– Pairing the Basegrip with a phone mount allows using the Steam Controller with the Steam Link app, but the controller does not yet work across all iOS and Android devices.
– Mechanism is opening a waitlist for a Steam Controller dock that stands the controller at an angle, with a launch planned for June 2026.
– Mechanism is offering free files for 3D printing your own versions of the Basegrip and a simplified dock.
– Valve previously used Mechanism’s mounts (formerly called Deckmate) to build the Steam Deck-filled orb featured in its lobby.

Valve’s new Steam Controller hits store shelves Monday at $99, and accessories maker Mechanism is already stepping up with the first compatible add-on. The company’s new Basegrip appears to be the very first accessory designed to attach the Steam Controller to a phone, along with the rest of Mechanism’s lineup of mounts that can hang handhelds and gamepads on an Ikea Skadis pegboard or just about any other surface. The Steam Controller mount will launch the same day as the controller itself, thanks to early access Valve provided to Mechanism.

When combined with Mechanism’s phone mount, the company says you can use the Steam Controller to remotely control your PC via the Steam Link streaming app. However, Mechanism acknowledges that “the controller doesn’t work across all of iOS or Android yet.” From my own testing on iOS, there are indeed some hiccups, so the Steam Controller paired with a Mechanism Basegrip and mount may not be the perfect mobile gaming solution just yet. (For what it’s worth, I was able to play games with the Steam Controller using the Steam Link iOS app.)

Mechanism is also opening a waitlist for a Steam Controller dock that holds the controller upright at an angle. The Steam Controller ships with a magnetically attached charging puck, but that puck , and the connected controller , normally sit flat on the ground. Mechanism says its dock is “perfectly weighted for your controller lifting pleasure” and “is designed to proudly display, charge, and connect your Steam Controller.” The dock waitlist is now open, with a launch expected in June 2026.

As it has done before, Mechanism is offering free 3D printable files for the Basegrip and a “stripped down Dock,” so you can make your own versions at home.

Valve previously used dozens of Mechanism’s mounts , then called Deckmate , to build the Steam Deck-filled orb now featured in the company’s lobby. Yes, the same orb that Hideo Kojima snapped a selfie with the other day.
