The initiative focuses on efficiently connecting 25 million premises to full-fibre broadband by late 2026 and transitioning a 24,000-strong commercial van fleet toward net-zero emissions.
For its fleet decarbonisation efforts, Openreach has migrated its vehicle telematics data to Google Cloud’s BigQuery platform. Using geoanalytics capabilities, the company analyzes real-world route data, usage patterns, and local charging infrastructure to pinpoint the most effective locations for replacing diesel vans with electric vehicles. This data-driven approach has already accelerated the EV transition, with newly deployed vehicles reportedly eliminating around 10,000 tonnes of CO2e annually. The same analytics help reduce unnecessary idling and mileage, especially within clean air zones, and enable predictive maintenance to minimize vehicle downtime.
Concurrently, the company is applying AI to streamline its nationwide full-fibre broadband rollout. Using Google’s Vertex AI platform, Openreach has built a comprehensive digital twin that models the UK’s transportation corridors. This model integrates data on 35 million homes and businesses with maps of road, rail, and waterway networks, alongside existing fibre infrastructure. Planners use this unified system to identify the most efficient paths for extending fibre, a task that previously required manually cross-referencing multiple disconnected datasets. Having already reached 22 million premises, Openreach aims for 25 million by December 2026, with a long-term goal of 30 million.
A third pillar of the partnership focuses on internal efficiency. Openreach is using Gemini Enterprise, Google Cloud’s agent orchestration platform, to automatically convert legacy SQL queries into optimized, production-ready BigQuery code. The company reports this automation has reduced engineering overhead by more than 50%, slashing the time required to gain insights from data. This allows data engineers to shift from routine code maintenance to developing new analytical solutions. While a targeted application, automating legacy query migration offers a clear demonstration of AI-driven productivity gains within a large organization managing substantial technical debt.
Operating at a vast scale, Openreach supports over 680 service providers through wholesale agreements and employs approximately 28,000 people. Its £15 billion investment in full-fibre infrastructure is one of the largest capital programs in UK telecoms history.
