Following the highly anticipated Copper Age release, Minecraft’s development team is already preparing the next major content expansion. The upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update plunges players into oceanic adventures, introducing a formidable new underwater companion and a fresh combat weapon to master.

During the recent Minecraft LIVE event, Mojang Studios unveiled the Mounts of Mayhem update, which focuses heavily on expanding underwater gameplay. The star of this new drop is a deep-sea creature called The Nautilus. This tentacled mob inhabits the ocean’s darkest, coldest depths and can be tamed by offering it Pufferfish. Once tamed, it serves as a unique underwater mount.

Riding a Nautilus offers a significant gameplay advantage: it completely pauses your oxygen meter. This eliminates the need for frequent surfacing, allowing for extended deep-sea exploration. To further enhance this experience, players can craft specialized Nautilus Armor using materials like iron, gold, diamond, and even Netherite, providing protection for their new aquatic steed. For those interested in breeding, taming both a male and female Nautilus allows you to raise adorable baby Nautiluses.

However, this new mob isn’t without its dangers. In a hostile twist, water zombies can spawn riding Zombie Nautiluses, using them as platforms to launch trident attacks at players.

The update also introduces a new weapon to Minecraft’s arsenal: the spear. This elegantly designed melee weapon is straightforward to craft and offers the benefit of increased reach, letting players jab at enemies from a safer distance. It even adds a new dynamic to mounted combat, enabling jousting on horseback. Naturally, the ever-adapting zombies won’t let players monopolize this advantage; they now appear on Zombie Horses at night, brandishing their own spears.

While a specific launch date hasn’t been confirmed, Mounts of Mayhem is projected for a Holiday 2025 release, ensuring players won’t have a long wait after the Copper Age to dive into this new content.

This has been a landmark year for the Minecraft franchise beyond the game itself. The live-action Minecraft Movie, featuring Jack Black, achieved remarkable success in theaters. A collaborative effort between Warner Bros., Legendary Entertainment, and Mojang, the film nearly grossed a billion dollars, securing its place as the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation in cinematic history, trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It is now available for digital purchase and on 4K Blu-ray, with a sequel already in early development.

Meanwhile, the previously announced Copper Age update is scheduled to go live on September 30. This release will finally add the long-requested Copper Golems and integrate copper as a versatile new resource for crafting and building.

Adding to the excitement, Mojang also revealed a special crossover during Minecraft LIVE. Players can claim a free Dragon Ball Z Super Saiyan hair cosmetic item until November 4, 2025.

Minecraft continues to hold its position as the best-selling video game of all time, with lifetime sales reaching an astounding 350 million copies. The game is accessible on virtually every modern platform, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. As a flagship title for Xbox, it is also included with an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
