Nintendo has rolled out a surprise Version 1.8.0 update for Mario Kart World, delivering a wave of nostalgic content to the platform this week. Arriving on September 9, 2026, this patch introduces ten classic circuits from the original Super Mario Kart alongside two fresh Knockout Tour routes. For players who have not yet installed the latest build, the update is now officially available and follows the significant overhaul introduced in June.
Classic Courses Return with New Mechanics
The most prominent addition is the inclusion of ten remastered tracks from the SNES era. These courses are now accessible in VS Race, Time Trials, Online Play, and Wireless Play modes. The specific circuits added include three variations of Mario Circuit (SNES), three from Ghost Valley (SNES), two from Choco Island (SNES), one from Sky-High Sundae (Vanilla Lake 1 SNES), and one from Koopa Beach (SNES).
A key mechanical shift accompanies these retro returns: item boxes have been replaced with item panels on the track. However, there is an exception to this rule. Item boxes will still appear on the race that leads directly into Mario Circuit, preserving a familiar dynamic for that specific segment. Players can select these classic courses once they have completed at least one rally within the Knockout Tour mode.
Enhanced Spectator Features and Player Capacity
Beyond new content, Nintendo has significantly expanded the capabilities for online and local multiplayer sessions. A major technical improvement allows up to 26 players to join a room in Online Play or LAN play. Under normal circumstances, up to 24 participants can actively compete. When the maximum number of competitors is reached, additional players must switch to Spectator Mode to join the session. This spectator role can be activated by pressing the Y Button from the pause menu after joining a room, allowing non-players to watch without interfering with the match.
Several quality-of-life improvements accompany this increased capacity. Players can now use the R Button to view real-time rankings while spectating during races or Knockout Tour events. Additionally, the Y Button serves a dual purpose: it switches the camera to the player’s perspective when spectating or playing, and it toggles Spectator Mode as noted above. A new filter has also been added to the frame appearing in Photo Mode via the pause menu, giving users more control over their screenshots.
Gameplay Adjustments and Bug Fixes
The update includes numerous adjustments to physics and item distribution to refine the racing experience. Developers have modified the slipperiness effect when covered in Blooper ink and reduced the frequency with which Green Shells, Coin Shells, fireballs, ice balls, and Boomerangs bounce off walls. Furthermore, the time required to return to normal speed after being crushed by a Thwomp has been decreased, while the invincibility period following a Boo stealing an item has been extended.
Item probability from boxes in races and Knockout Tour has been adjusted, and the method for calculating rates when scores are tied in Battle mode has changed. Auto-Use Items can now be utilized even when set to Custom Items. Players can also see which items rivals might be holding, including Coins, ? Blocks, Kamek, Blooper, Feather, Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Boomerang, and Hammer.
In Time Trials, lap times are now displayed, and the color coding for time differences against ghost data has been inverted: red indicates a faster player time, while blue signifies a slower time. To address specific track issues, wall riding around the edge of the road in Ghost Valley is no longer possible, and buoys have been added to the route connecting Acorn Heights and Dry Bones Burnout to Boo Cinema.
