The wait is finally over. After years of speculation and anticipation, BMW has officially confirmed what enthusiasts have long hoped for: the 2027 BMW M2 will be available with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Borrowed from the M3 and M4, this option brings a new level of capability to the compact performance coupe.

Under the hood, the familiar 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six remains unchanged. It still delivers 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, matching the output of the rear-wheel-drive automatic M2. However, the xDrive variant is exclusively paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed manual remains available, but only for rear-drive models.

Drivers can toggle between AWD and RWD modes at the push of a button. When switching to rear-wheel drive, the stability control system is fully deactivated, making it easy to execute drifts or controlled slides. BMW has also tuned the transfer case control unit and wheel slip limitation specifically for the M2 xDrive. The car rides on a staggered wheel setup with 19-inch fronts and 20-inch rears, and optional track-focused tires are available.

Performance gains are immediate and significant. BMW claims the xDrive model sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, a 0.3-second improvement over the rear-drive automatic. That puts it only 0.2 seconds behind the M4 Competition xDrive, despite having 50 fewer horsepower. Top speed remains 155 mph as standard, rising to 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package.

Of course, adding all-wheel drive comes with a weight penalty. The M2 xDrive tips the scales at 3,988 pounds, which is 121 pounds heavier than the rear-drive automatic M2. Compared to the more focused M2 CS, the gap widens to 218 pounds.

A striking new color makes its debut for 2027: Individual Borusan Turkish Blue, shown here as the launch shade for the xDrive model. Note that the images depict a European-spec car; U. S. models will feature an “xDrive” badge on the rear.

Official pricing for the full 2027 M2 lineup has not been released, but BMW has confirmed the xDrive model will start at $74,950. That represents a $4,600 premium over the base 2026 M2, but it is also $18,100 less than an M4 Competition xDrive. Given the performance boost, the price seems reasonable, and the model is expected to be a popular choice when it arrives at dealerships this summer.
