This spring, Apple Podcasts is set to transform the listening experience by introducing a powerful new video podcast feature. This major update leverages Apple’s own HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology to deliver a premium viewing experience for audiences while giving creators more tools and control than ever before. The move represents a significant evolution for the platform that helped popularize podcasting two decades ago.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, framed this as a pivotal moment. He noted that from integrating podcasts into iTunes to launching the dedicated app, Apple has consistently shaped the medium. “Today marks a defining milestone in that journey,” Cue stated. “By bringing a category-leading video experience to Apple Podcasts, we’re putting creators in full control of their content and how they build their businesses.”
For listeners, the integration promises a seamless experience. Users can effortlessly switch between watching and listening within the app. Features include moving to a horizontal full-screen display, downloading videos for offline viewing, and automatic quality adjustment that ensures smooth playback regardless of network conditions. These video episodes will be fully integrated into the existing Apple Podcasts ecosystem, appearing in personalized recommendations, editorial curation, and category pages.
The update is particularly significant for content creators and the advertising community. Creators maintain complete control over their content and monetization strategies, distributing through participating hosting providers. Major partners at launch include Acast, ART19 (an Amazon company), Triton’s Omny Studio, and SiriusXM (including its media and ad platforms). A key new capability is the option for creators to dynamically insert video ads, including host-read spots, which opens access to the lucrative video advertising market. Apple does not charge creators or hosting providers to distribute podcasts, whether audio or this new HLS video format. However, starting later this year, Apple will charge participating ad networks an impression-based fee for delivering dynamic ads within HLS video on its platform.
Industry leaders expressed strong support for the development. Acast CEO Greg Glenday called it a “defining moment” that expands possibilities for creators and advertisers. He emphasized that the integration unlocks new audiences and revenue streams, ensuring creators don’t “leave revenue or reach on the table.”
Geoff Mattei, CEO of ART19, highlighted that video represents the next chapter for podcasting. He praised Apple for simplifying distribution and providing the flexible monetization solutions that video content deserves. Scott Walker, chief advertising revenue officer at SiriusXM, viewed the innovation as a way to preserve the integrity of podcasting while enhancing it with new capabilities as audio and video formats converge.
Sharon Taylor, Triton Digital’s chief revenue officer, pointed to the importance of Apple’s open approach, which lets publishers retain control over their audiences and advertising while expanding content access across formats.
This enhancement builds upon Apple Podcasts’ existing foundation, which offers millions of shows across hundreds of categories in over 170 countries. The platform’s popular features, like Enhance Dialogue mode, variable playback speeds, chapters, and transcripts, will extend to video content. Listeners can also continue to support creators directly through premium subscriptions for ad-free listening and exclusive content.
The HLS video functionality is available for beta testing starting today in upcoming software versions. A full public rollout for iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and the web is scheduled for this spring.
