Ghost of Yotei Sales Match Ghost of Tsushima Success in Europe

▼ Summary
– Ghost of Yotei debuted at No.2 in European sales charts, performing similarly to its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima in initial sales.
– The game is Sony’s biggest first-party PlayStation launch since Spider-Man 2 in October 2023, though Helldivers 2 remains PlayStation Studios’ fastest-selling title.
– Sony has released relatively few new first-party games recently, with several live-service projects canceled and some studios like Naughty Dog skipping PS5 with new games.
– In the U.S., Ghost of Yotei matched Ghost of Tsushima’s launch performance with 4.4% of active PlayStation players engaging in its first week.
– Developer Sucker Punch will decide its next project after releasing the Ghost of Yotei: Legends multiplayer add-on in 2026, maintaining their one-project-at-a-time approach.
Ghost of Yotei has achieved a sales performance in Europe that closely mirrors the successful launch of its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, according to fresh market data. The Game Business reported that the new title debuted at the number two spot on the GSD European charts, trailing only behind EA’s FC 26. Although Sony has not released official sales numbers for the PlayStation 5 exclusive, which launched on October 2, 2025, the data covering its initial days on the market through October 5 indicates a very strong start.
This comparable performance is particularly noteworthy given the different market conditions each game faced. Ghost of Tsushima launched on the PlayStation 4, a console with a significantly larger established user base than the current PS5 install base. Furthermore, its 2020 release occurred during the peak of the pandemic, a period that saw unprecedented spikes in video game engagement and sales due to widespread lockdowns.
The report also highlights that Ghost of Yotei represents Sony’s most significant first-party PlayStation launch since Spider-Man 2 debuted in October 2023. For context, Helldivers 2, released in February 2024, holds the record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, moving an astounding 12 million units within its first twelve weeks. The long-term commercial success of Ghost of Yotei remains to be seen, but its predecessor ultimately became a massive hit, surpassing 13 million copies sold by September 2024.
This launch also brings attention to the relatively sparse output from Sony’s internal studios in recent years. Since Spider-Man 2’s release, the first-party lineup has included Helldivers 2, the poorly received Concord, the critically acclaimed Astro Bot, Lego Horizon Adventures, MLB The Show 25, and several remasters. Notably, Naughty Dog has not released a brand-new game during the entire PS5 generation so far.
A number of first-party projects are confirmed to be in development. These include Bungie’s Marathon, Housemarque’s Saros, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine, Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Haven’s Fairgames, and a multiplayer Horizon title from Guerrilla. However, Sony’s broader live-service initiative has stumbled, leading to the cancellation of several anticipated games. These canceled projects included a multiplayer The Last of Us, a live-service God of War title, and another live-service game from Bend Studio, whose last original release was 2019’s Days Gone.
The game’s performance in the United States appears to echo its European debut. According to Circana’s senior director Mat Piscatella, Ghost of Yotei ranked 12th on the Top 15 Titles by Total Weekly Active Users chart for the week ending October 4. Intriguingly, 4.4% of active PlayStation players engaged with the title during that period, an identical percentage and chart position to what Ghost of Tsushima achieved in its own launch week back in 2020.
This suggests the sequel is tracking very closely with the original’s launch trajectory. Industry watchers will be keen to see if Sony comments on its performance in future financial disclosures and how its sales momentum carries into the critical holiday shopping season.
Looking ahead for developer Sucker Punch, co-founder Brian Fleming stated in an interview that the studio will determine its next project following the 2026 release of the Ghost of Yotei: Legends multiplayer expansion. He emphasized that the lean team operates on a one-project-at-a-time basis, so fans should not anticipate a rapid succession of new games from the studio.
