During a recent demonstration in a Mountain View, California kitchen, Memo showcased its skills by preparing a fresh espresso from start to finish.
Memo sports a sleek white design reminiscent of animated robots, complete with two articulated arms and a friendly digital face. Instead of walking on legs, it glides smoothly on a wheeled base and adjusts its height by sliding up and down a central column. This unique mobility system allows it to navigate countertops and appliances with surprising agility.
When asked to make an espresso, the robot rolled over to the machine and began its methodical process. Using its two pincer-like hands, it carefully measured coffee grounds into the portafilter, tamped them down firmly, and locked the filter into the group head. It then positioned a cup beneath the spout, activated the machine with precise button presses, and finally retrieved the freshly brewed drink.
Tony Zhao, cofounder and CEO of Sunday Robotics, explained the company’s driving mission. “We want to build robots that free people from laundry, from the dishes, from all chores,” he remarked, just as Memo delivered the hot coffee to its waiting recipient.
While making a single espresso may seem like a simple task, it represents a significant technical challenge for a machine operating in an unpredictable home environment. The robot must accurately identify various objects, determine how to grip them securely, and manipulate them correctly to complete multi-step processes. Sunday Robotics is tackling this by developing both its own specialized hardware and the advanced AI models that power the system. Zhao emphasized their comprehensive approach, stating, “We think the way to make a home robot is to be full-stack, and to vertically integrate. And that’s a very ambitious thing to do.” This integrated strategy is key to creating a robot capable of reliably assisting with a wide range of domestic duties.
