OpenAI has launched GPT-5.1, a significant enhancement to its flagship AI model designed to make interactions with ChatGPT more intelligent and engaging. This latest version introduces two specialized models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. The Instant model is described as warmer, more responsive, and better at following user directions, while the Thinking model offers improved clarity on straightforward tasks and greater persistence when tackling complex challenges. Most user queries will be automatically directed to the model best suited to handle them, ensuring more accurate and relevant responses. Both new models will become available to ChatGPT users this week, with the previous GPT-5 versions remaining accessible for three months via the legacy models menu before being phased out.
Alongside these technical upgrades, OpenAI is expanding the range of personality presets that shape how ChatGPT communicates. Users can now select from a broader set of conversational tones, including Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. The company also announced an experimental feature that will allow certain users to fine-tune the AI’s style directly from their settings, offering even more personalized interaction. According to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, the platform’s massive user base, now exceeding 800 million people, demands a move away from a one-size-fits-all approach.
The release of GPT-5.1 follows a somewhat lukewarm reception to GPT-5 in August. Despite high expectations set by CEO Sam Altman, many users felt the improvements were too incremental and expressed dissatisfaction when it became the default model. In response to user feedback, OpenAI quickly reinstated GPT-4o as an available option just one day after GPT-5’s initial rollout. Meanwhile, Microsoft, a key strategic partner of OpenAI, has reportedly increased its interest in models developed by rival firm Anthropic, following GPT-5’s failure to significantly raise performance standards. Anthropic’s technology is already being integrated into several Microsoft products, including Copilot Researcher, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, and a new Office Agent capable of generating Word and PowerPoint documents directly from the Copilot chat interface.
This update arrives shortly after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser. Currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, Atlas includes an “agent mode” that functions similarly to the company’s Operator tool, performing browser-based actions on behalf of users.
