Brave Search has introduced a significant enhancement to its platform with the launch of Ask Brave, an AI-driven feature designed to deliver comprehensive, detailed responses to user queries. This new tool operates alongside the existing AI Answers function, which previously provided brief summaries. According to the company, its AI systems already handle more than 15 million daily answer requests, illustrating substantial user engagement.
Ask Brave does not require users to switch to a special mode, the search engine automatically identifies when a query would benefit from an in-depth AI response. To initiate a search, individuals can click the ask button beside the Brave search bar, select the Ask tab from the results page, or simply append a double question mark (“??”) to their query if Brave is set as their default search engine.
Josep M. Pujol, Brave’s head of search, emphasized the distinction between the two AI features. He explained that while AI Answers offer quick summaries, Ask Brave provides longer, more detailed responses complete with follow-up options and a chat mode enhanced by Deep Research. The feature also integrates relevant enrichments such as videos, news articles, product listings, and local business information, all presented contextually. Pujol noted, “Search makes it possible, LLMs glue it together. We expect Ask Brave to generate millions more daily AI-powered answers by combining search and chat capabilities.”
The answers generated by Ask Brave resemble detailed reports, similar to outputs from platforms like ChatGPT or Perplexity, and include linked sources, embedded videos, and image carousels. After receiving an initial answer, users can interact further by asking the AI to reformat the response or answer related follow-up questions.
Brave ensures the reliability of its AI-generated content by using its proprietary API to ground search results for accuracy, supplemented by deep research for specific types of queries.
The expansion of AI-powered question-and-answer tools is becoming more common across search platforms. For instance, Google recently extended its own AI Overviews to additional languages, including a worldwide rollout for Spanish. Brave differentiates its offering with a strong privacy commitment, stating that user chats are encrypted and automatically deleted after 24 hours of inactivity.
