A recent study reveals that 7% of games on Steam now openly acknowledge using generative AI in their development process. This figure translates to 7,818 titles out of approximately 114,126 available on the platform as of mid-July 2025, based on data extracted from Steam’s API.
The findings mark a dramatic surge compared to earlier research conducted in April 2024, where only 1.1% of Steam’s catalog included AI disclosure. Since then, the platform has added over 20,000 new games, with one in five releases in 2025 explicitly stating their reliance on generative AI tools.
Visual asset creation dominates AI adoption, accounting for roughly 60% of disclosed usage. Beyond graphics, developers are leveraging AI for audio synthesis, narrative and dialogue generation, marketing materials, and even coding or game logic automation.
Notable titles like inZOI (textures and character behavior), Liar’s Bar (voice synthesis), and Comedy Night (content moderation) have been transparent about their AI integration. However, the trend hasn’t been without controversy. 11-Bit Studios faced backlash after undisclosed AI-generated text appeared in The Alters, prompting the developer to commit to removing the contentious elements.
The rapid growth in AI adoption highlights both its expanding role in game development and the increasing importance of transparency as the industry navigates ethical and creative considerations.
