The original plan, disclosed on May 13, would have separated usage of the Claude Agent SDK from what Anthropic calls “standard” Claude use. That standard use includes the chat interface and the official Claude CLI. Under the proposed model, any SDK activity,including third-party app usage and the programmatic “claude -p” command,would have been billed at Anthropic’s standard API rates starting June 15. Subscribers would have received a simple monthly credit equal to their subscription fee, but anything beyond that would incur per-token costs.
That approach marked a sharp departure from the current system, where Agent SDK usage is only limited by the weekly caps tied to a user’s subscription tier. Those caps are generous enough that heavy users can extract far more value from a single subscription than they would by paying the equivalent amount in API fees. One analysis found that Claude Opus subscribers begin saving money after just two to three messages per day, and that a single subscription can deliver many times its monthly cost in equivalent API usage.
By pausing the change, Anthropic has effectively postponed a potential cost spike for developers and businesses that have built workflows around the SDK. The company has not yet indicated a new timeline for revisiting the pricing model.
