Mastodon Bans AI Training on User Data

▼ Summary

– Social networks like X and Mastodon are updating terms to ban AI model training using scraped user data.
– Mastodon explicitly prohibits scraping for LLM training, effective July 1, with strict legal language against automated data extraction.
– Mastodon’s new terms apply only to its Mastodon.social server, leaving other fediverse servers potentially vulnerable to scraping.
– Other platforms, including OpenAI and Reddit, have also introduced rules to block unauthorized AI model training.
– Mastodon is raising its global age limit from 13 to 16, aligning with stricter user age requirements.

Social media platforms are taking stronger measures to protect user data from being harvested for artificial intelligence training. Following similar moves by other networks, Mastodon has updated its policies to explicitly ban the scraping of user content for AI model development, joining a growing industry pushback against unauthorized data collection.

The decentralized platform recently notified users about revised terms prohibiting large language model (LLM) training or any unauthorized archival use of posted content. “We want to make it absolutely clear that training AI systems on Mastodon user data without permission violates our policies,” the company stated in an email announcement.

Effective July 1, the updated terms introduce strict legal wording against automated data extraction tools. The rules explicitly forbid the use of scrapers, bots, or data mining software to collect information from Mastodon.social, the platform’s flagship server. Exceptions apply only for standard search engine indexing or browser caching.

However, the policy currently applies solely to Mastodon.social, meaning other independent servers within the fediverse may still be vulnerable if they haven’t implemented similar restrictions. This loophole could allow AI companies to gather data from less-regulated instances unless administrators proactively update their own terms.

The move aligns with broader industry trends, as companies like OpenAI and Reddit have also tightened policies to prevent third parties from exploiting user-generated content for AI training. Beyond data protection, Mastodon is also raising its minimum user age from 13 to 16 globally, reflecting stricter standards for younger audiences.

As debates over data privacy and AI ethics intensify, platforms are increasingly drawing legal boundaries to safeguard user contributions. Mastodon’s latest updates signal a firm stance against unchecked data harvesting, though enforcement across its decentralized network remains a challenge.
