Microsoft Launches Windows Recall to Public After Year-Long Wait

After nearly a year since its announcement, Microsoft is set to release the much-debated Windows Recall feature to the general public, as revealed on the Windows Experience Blog today.

Exclusively available on Copilot+ PCs,a select group of Windows 11 systems sold over the past year,Recall functions by continuously capturing screenshots of all activities on your PC. It saves these images, extracts text from them, and stores everything in a searchable database. This feature raises significant security and privacy concerns, as anyone with access to the Recall database can see almost everything performed on the PC. The initial rollout of Recall faced substantial challenges due to these issues.

The journey to Recall’s release included an initial hurried launch attempt, severe criticism regarding its then-lacking security measures, numerous delays, a comprehensive overhaul of the system, and five months of rigorous testing within Microsoft’s Windows Insider beta program. Indications that Recall was nearing readiness came two weeks ago when it reached the near-final Release Preview channel.

Recent evaluations of the new Recall version, conducted by Ars and other security experts, reveal that Microsoft has addressed many of the major security concerns. Enhanced automated content filtering has been implemented to prevent the storage of certain types of sensitive information, although this filtering remains somewhat inconsistent. Crucially, Recall is now an opt-in feature rather than opt-out, and users have the option to remove it entirely.
