Amazon Ads has officially expanded its reach into ChatGPT, allowing brands to purchase advertising space within the popular AI chatbot through Amazon’s existing programmatic infrastructure. The partnership between Amazon Ads and OpenAI was confirmed in a blog post released on September 10, marking a significant shift in how retailers can engage with users in conversational environments. While the initiative is currently in a pilot phase for select US advertisers, it signals a major integration of e-commerce advertising into the rapidly growing field of generative AI.
Streamlining the Ad Buying Process
The primary advantage of this new arrangement is simplicity for marketers. Brands that already utilize Amazon DSP (Demand-Side Platform) can now extend their existing campaigns directly to ChatGPT without needing to establish separate relationships or technical integrations with OpenAI. According to reports from TechRadar, advertisers retain full control over budgeting and targeting through Amazon’s interface, paying either on a cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand-impressions basis.
While Amazon manages the campaign setup and billing, the actual delivery logic resides with OpenAI. An Amazon spokesperson clarified to CNBC that OpenAI’s ad system determines exactly which ads are served to which users. Visually, these advertisements appear as text or images positioned immediately below the AI’s response. OpenAI has emphasized that these placements are clearly labeled as sponsored content to maintain transparency. For example, if a user asks ChatGPT for marathon training advice, they might encounter a sponsored link for running shoes available on Amazon. This seamless integration allows brands to insert themselves into relevant conversations at the moment of high consumer intent.
Industry Reactions and Strategic Insights
The move is being hailed as a critical evolution in digital marketing. Chris Conetta, director of omnichannel supply at Amazon DSP, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion. “Conversational ads represent the fastest growing engagement opportunity for brands to reach new and existing audiences,” he said in the announcement. With access to ChatGPT Ads, he added, advertisers can extend their campaigns to where customers spend time in conversational chat platforms.
Early adopters are already testing the waters. Delta Vacations, the travel division of Delta Air Lines, is participating in the trial. Katrin Koenig, president of Delta Vacations, expressed enthusiasm about the platform’s potential. “We’re proud to be among the first brands testing this new approach,” she said. She noted that the company plans to leverage “deep consumer insights” to strategically determine when and how Delta Vacations appears in ChatGPT ads, ensuring relevance and value for users.
OpenAI’s Rapidly Scaling Ad Business
This partnership arrives as OpenAI accelerates its monetization efforts. The company launched sponsored placements in the US in February, initially partnering with major retailers like Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma. At that time, OpenAI reported having 900 million weekly active users. By late August, the company announced that its ad business had achieved a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. Additionally, OpenAI has begun expanding its ad offerings to 31 European markets.
Prior to the Amazon deal, advertisers had limited options for buying ChatGPT ads, primarily using OpenAI’s direct interface or smaller ad-tech partners such as Criteo and Kargo. TNW reported in April that OpenAI was actively hiring firms to develop specialized conversational ad formats. Amazon’s entry brings massive scale to this ecosystem. Citing Marketing Dive, TechRadar described Amazon’s ad business as the third-largest digital advertising entity globally, generating approximately $70 billion in annual ad revenue. This vast infrastructure provides OpenAI with a robust partner capable of handling large-scale programmatic demands.
Broader Context: Amazon’s AI Strategy and Financial Ties
The collaboration fits into Amazon’s broader strategy regarding artificial intelligence and e-commerce. Historically, Amazon has restricted third-party AI platforms like ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini from accessing its product catalog. Instead, the tech giant has invested heavily in its own AI shopping tools. However, legal dynamics are shifting; in August, a US court overturned Amazon’s ban on Perplexity’s AI agent, allowing it to shop on the platform.
Interestingly, Amazon is also a heavy user of ChatGPT’s advertising inventory. Data from Sensor Tower indicates that Amazon was the top retail advertiser on the platform between April and August. Other financial institutions are also exploring similar integrations, with Synchrony working to enable its Amazon and Walmart store cards to function within ChatGPT.
Underpinning this technological alliance is a substantial financial commitment. Amazon agreed in February to invest $50 billion in OpenAI, beginning with an initial $15 billion. The remaining $35 billion is contingent on specific conditions being met. The Information has reported that Amazon has already completed the second tranche of this investment. Furthermore, under the same partnership agreement, Amazon stated that OpenAI’s models will be accessible via its Bedrock cloud service and will utilize Amazon’s Trainium chips, further cementing the two companies’ interdependent relationship.
