Plex launches 5-year membership pass at $250

▼ Summary

– Plex increased the Lifetime Plex Pass price to $750 and introduced a new five-year subscription for $250.
– The previous $250 Lifetime Pass was available from March 2025 until the day before the price hike.
– Plex stated the price increase reflects the real, ongoing value of the software and its commitment to future development.
– The changes aim to push users toward subscriptions, which provide more predictable recurring revenue and reduce dependence on advertising.
– Plex has not yet achieved profitability and has raised $87.6 million over nine funding rounds.

When Plex first launched in 2012, a lifetime membership to its media server software cost just $75. Two years later, the company raised that price to $120, citing the need for a more sustainable business model. For years, that $120 Lifetime Plex Pass remained the standard. Even the $250 option introduced in March 2025 seemed like a solid deal. But as of yesterday, that same $250 now buys something entirely different: a five-year subscription.

The Desk first reported on this shift. Plex has introduced a five-year Plex Pass, while simultaneously hiking the Lifetime Pass price to a staggering $750. This change, which Plex first announced in May, was explained in a blog post update this week as a reflection of “the real, ongoing value of the software and our commitment to building, improving, and supporting Plex for years to come.”

The dramatic difference in what $250 now offers signals a clear shift in Plex’s financial strategy. The company has not yet achieved profitability, despite raising $87.6 million across nine funding rounds, according to CB Insights. Plex is now focused on extracting more revenue from its user base and repositioning its media server business at a higher price point.

The combination of a much costlier Lifetime Pass and the new five-year subscription appears designed to steer users toward recurring payments. Predictable, subscription-based revenue offers several advantages: it allows Plex to extract greater lifetime value from each customer, smooths out cash flow, appeals to investors, funds ongoing feature development, and reduces reliance on the unpredictable advertising market.

Back in May, Plex acknowledged that it had “considered eliminating the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past, given that recurring subscriptions help us sustain long-term development.” It’s now reasonable to wonder whether this five-year pass is the longest-term option Plex will ever offer its media server customers.
