Google Debuts AI Mode Agents for Ultra Subscribers

▼ Summary

– Google launched information agents in Search for AI Ultra subscribers, covering all AI Mode languages and markets, as announced by VP Robby Stein on June 12, 2026.
– The agents monitor topics in the background and send users detailed updates with web links when new information is available, working around the clock.
– The launch follows a May I/O announcement, but currently only Ultra subscribers have access, with Pro subscribers’ timeline unspecified.
– Information agents change content reach by sending updates on new information instead of requiring repeated queries, and updates include links that can drive traffic.
– Stein stated access will expand to more people this summer, but did not confirm if the feature will reach free users.

Google is rolling out AI Mode information agents within Search, now available to AI Ultra subscribers across all supported languages and markets. This marks a significant step in how users can passively track evolving topics directly through the search engine.

Robby Stein, Google’s Vice President of Product for Search, confirmed the launch in a post on X. He noted that broader access is expected to arrive later this summer. The feature was first previewed at Google I/O roughly three weeks ago, where the company demonstrated how these agents can monitor subjects in the background and push notifications with relevant web links as new information surfaces.

How the Information Agents Function

Users simply ask AI Mode to stay informed on a specific topic, and the agent continuously scans for updates. Stein explained that the agent operates continuously, sending detailed notifications and source links the moment fresh data becomes available. According to Google’s I/O presentation, the agents search across a wide range of sources, including blogs, news outlets, and social media posts. They also incorporate real-time data from Google’s own systems covering finance, shopping, and sports.

Comparing the Launch to the I/O Roadmap

When Google first announced the agents in May, the plan was to introduce them first to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers during the summer. The current rollout, however, is limited to Ultra subscribers only. Stein’s announcement did not specify when Pro users will gain access, describing the Ultra group as the “first group” to try the feature, with plans to expand to more users throughout the summer.

What This Means for Content Discovery

This development fundamentally changes the timing of content discovery for users. Instead of manually repeating a search query each week, a person receives an alert only when something new appears. Because these notifications include links back to the web, agent-driven updates can still generate referral traffic. Stein’s post did not clarify how agents prioritize or select which sources to include in an update.

The Ultra-only requirement keeps the initial user base small. If access broadens as promised this summer, a growing number of recurring searches could shift from active, manual queries to passive, background monitoring.

What Comes Next

Stein’s announcement did not address whether the feature will eventually extend to free-tier users. At I/O, Google also confirmed that agentic booking capabilities will be made available to all users in the U. S. this summer. Additionally, custom experiences with Antigravity within Search are slated for the coming months, beginning with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U. S.
