Google has introduced what it calls the most significant update to its search box in a quarter-century, rolling out the Intelligent Search box powered by the latest Gemini 3.5 Flash release. This redesign is designed to give users more room to pose longer, more detailed queries while seamlessly integrating Google’s AI-powered search features.
The new search box expands dynamically as users type, accommodating more complex prompts. Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, emphasized that its AI-driven suggestions now “go beyond autocomplete,” offering smarter, more contextual guidance. Users can also search using text, images, files, videos, or even their Chrome tabs.
“This puts Google’s most powerful AI tools right at your fingertips, making it easier to ask your questions,” Reid said.
Google is also making its AI Overviews more accessible. The company announced that the smooth transition from standard search to AI Mode is now live globally on both desktop and mobile. This feature initially rolled out to many users in January but is now fully operational, allowing for a more fluid shift between traditional search results and AI-generated insights.
For publishers and website owners, this shift carries significant implications. The redesigned search box could alter how users interact with Google, potentially changing the type of search traffic your site receives. More users may jump directly into AI Mode or encounter deeper AI Overviews, which could lead to fewer clicks to external websites. As Google Search evolves from single queries into ongoing conversations and agentic workflows, the way people search is fundamentally changing.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted that the extraordinary aspect of Search is how users continue to expect more from it. “Search is the most used product in the world,” he said, adding that the company will “evolve super hard to stay a step ahead of where our users want to be.” While change can be challenging, it remains an inevitable part of Google’s trajectory.
