Tesla has broadened a safety recall for its Powerwall 2 home batteries to the United States, addressing a potential fire hazard linked to a manufacturing flaw in certain cells. The recall impacts roughly 10,500 units distributed nationwide via Tesla’s official website and authorized installers from November 2020 through December 2022. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the underlying issue involves a “third-party battery cell defect” that can lead to abnormal operation, overheating, and in some instances, smoking or flames. To date, the company has documented 22 overheating incidents, six reports of smoke, and five cases of minor property damage from fire, though no injuries have been reported.

The affected Powerwall 2 batteries are identifiable by the model name printed on the unit’s side. Tesla has indicated that the vast majority of these batteries have already been remotely discharged to eliminate any immediate operational danger. Technicians will handle discharging any remaining units still posing a risk.

All customers with recalled units will receive a free removal and replacement service. Notifications are being sent directly through the Tesla mobile app to alert owners. The company is expediting the replacement process, with certified installers proactively reaching out by email or telephone to arrange installation appointments. For assistance, customers should first contact their original installer.
