Sony’s PS Portal has firmly established itself as the leading device for PS5 Remote Play, surpassing all other methods including mobile phones, PCs, and even other PlayStation consoles. Designed specifically for this function, the dedicated handheld has captured a significant user base, with current estimates suggesting nearly 5% of all PS5 owners in the United States now possess the device. This impressive adoption rate underscores the peripheral’s market success.
A recent software enhancement has substantially increased the Portal’s versatility. PS Plus Premium subscribers can now stream a library of over 2,800 games directly to the device via cloud streaming, completely eliminating the requirement for a local PS5 console. This major upgrade transforms the handheld into a more independent gaming platform, greatly expanding its potential uses beyond simple in-home streaming.
Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager of Product Development, provided data that confirms the device’s dominant position. He stated that user engagement metrics clearly show PS Portal owners are more active than those who do not use the device. Furthermore, he confirmed that the Portal is now the single most widely used platform for accessing PS5 Remote Play, having overtaken all other compatible devices.
This outcome, while logical given the product’s specialized design, highlights how effectively the Portal has penetrated the gaming market. The most compelling part of the story, however, is the dramatic shift in consumer perception. Before its launch, a 2023 poll of nearly 6,000 individuals revealed considerable skepticism. At that time, a full 60% of respondents declared they had no intention of buying the PS Portal, with half of that group expressing “zero interest” in the product.
Recent polling data tells a completely different story. In a survey conducted last week, those numbers had inverted. Approximately 51% of participating users reported that they now own a PS Portal. More importantly, a substantial 32% of all respondents confirmed they actively use the device at least once per week, demonstrating a strong transition from initial disinterest to regular, practical use.
